Wooden card systems operate by physically moving the latches in the locking mechanism through the placement of the card, which activates LED lights based on a pattern of holes in the card and detects the result, whether by swiping or inserting a magnetic stripe card, or by bringing RFID or NFC cards close to a sensor. Key cards can also serve as identification cards or can be transmitted to a smartphone for integration into a digital wallet system (like Apple Pay or Google Pay), eliminating the need for a physical key card.
There are several common types of key cards in use, including barcode cards, magnetic stripe cards, Wiegand wire embedded cards, smart cards (with read/write capabilities and embedded electronic microchips), as well as RFID and NFC proximity cards. Key cards are often used as an alternative to mechanical keys in hotels.
